The seeds were planted some six years ago for The Stonebrook Project.
In January 2008, I was diagnosed with Stage 0 DCIS breast cancer. After many doctor’s appointments and discussing my options, I chose to have a single mastectomy with reconstruction. When the doctor walked into my hospital room and told me my lymph nodes were clear, I wept. He said, “you are cancer free.”
During the next two years of appointments and surgeries, I began to reevaluate my purpose. Even the smallest task, I took for granted like washing my hair, lifting my arms above my head and driving. The outpouring of love, support and help that I received during this time was overwhelming.
In April 2010, I had the opportunity to start a small business and we officially opened Stonebrook Day Spa in August. Beyond being a day spa, Stonebrook was designed to provide a sanctuary of relaxation, pain management and physical and emotional healing for cancer patients.
We participated in the Susan G. Komen – Tulsa Race for the Cure 2011, where we offered one free massage to cancer patients and survivors. That opened many doors to meet those who were battling cancer. Then it became evident that I could not just serve breast cancer patients; it had to be anyone facing cancer.
Cancer doesn’t discriminate: female, male, adults and yes even children. Our youngest client was eight years old at the time and our oldest is in her 70’s. We see some once a month, some every two weeks and others weekly, depending on unique and individual needs. The services include massage therapy, reflexology, foot detox and yes even some nail services.
The number eight stands for new beginnings. January 18, 2008 I received my diagnosis. February 23, 2018 I will celebrate 38 years of marriage with my husband, Ronnie. March 25, 2018, I will celebrate 10 years of being cancer free!
The Stonebrook Project is committed to making a difference in lives of our cancer patients as well as their caregivers.
Please join us, as a partner, as we celebrate the launch of this nonprofit in 2018!
